Prepare supplier “short list”

Once your supplier long list is ready, let’s say you have 30 suppliers in your list to consider (I also saw some client sourcing 100-200 supplier as supplier database for future study).

What: Your next goal is to figure out 3-5 suppliers who you are going to have deep study, and you are going to have personal visiting to them or hire 3rd party agent to visit them if you cannot go in person.

How: choose 10 suppliers from your long list, look at their website, make a phone call to them, send inquiry to them, the purpose is to test your target supplier to exam their responding time, their communication style, their attitude, their skills, their payment terms, their unit price…etc.

I believe you will find the final 3-5 suppliers which you are going to visiting after step of “how”.

Then you must spend money to visit your 3-5 potential suppliers (no matter visit in person or by agent).

If visit to 3-5 suppliers cost too much for you. You can constrain your visiting to 1-2 potential supplier.
